Let's get ready to discover and explore the  wonderful world of the Visual Arts!

Welcome 2019-2020

Welcome to the Hornet Art Studio!  I am Mrs. Herek, the elementary Art Teacher and I'm very excited to share my love of art and creativity with the Discovery and Explorer students this upcoming year.  Students will be attending visual arts class every 6 days and each class will run for 50-minutes.
  • Each year, we start with a Self-Portrait along with our fundraiser.  The fundraiser helps offset the cost of our ceramics unit with the purchase of clay and glazes along with other supplies, materials, teaching aids, and prints that are needed throughout the year.
  • Next 1st through 5th graders head into our annual Smokey Bear/Woodys Owl poster contest.  Additionally, this year, 4th & 5th graders will have the opportunity to participate in a Recycled Sculpture contest.  Both of these contests are VOLUNTARY and are sponsored by the Red Cedar Garden Club.  Details and deadlines will be coming home in October.
  • While the older artists work on graphic design and poster creations, our younger artist learn about the elements and principles of art and begin to explore different materials, methods, and artists.
With each new year, I am alway looking for DONATIONS to help the art studio run smoothly as well as PARENT VOLUNTEERS!  Below is a list of donations that are well used and greatly appreciated in the Hornet Art Studio.  There is also a sign up genius if you would like to volunteer - tasks include filing self portraits, cutting paper for projects, sorting and organizing supplies, cutting and weighing clay, hanging/taking down artwork, labeling artwork - just to name.  Please feel free to email me with any questions regarding the donations or volunteering!

Families - There are several visual arts opportunities for your students during this time.  Some classes have talked about them and even started them, others have not due to the numerous snow days.  Please remember these are all voluntary and do require parental/guardian permission to participate. Below find a description of each opportunity and deadlines (note:  Doodle for Google has been extended).

Doodle for Google:  Sponsored by Google
Students must finish the sentence “When I grow up, I hope…” and then recreate the Google logo into illustrations that match the sentence.  Here is last year’s winner using the sentence “I am inspired by…” it was won by 7- year old Sara Gomez-Lane. Entry forms can be picked up in the Art Room or downloaded from the Doodle for Google homepage (doodleforgoogle.com).  Scholarship money and money for our school are part of the prizes for this contest.  There are regional and age group winners.

Meemic Masterpiece:  Sponsored by Meemic Insurance
Student can chose to create a piece of artwork using one of 3 themes.  The artwork should be a minimum of 8x10 and no bigger than 16x20 and can be decorated with markers, crayons, colored pencils, or paint.  Paper (choice of 12x18 or 9x12) and entry form can be picked up in the art room.  Prizes are awarded to 50 students, with each student receiving a personal Chromebook as well as money for each student’s school art program.  This competition is only open to students in Georgia, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and each entry must be submitted by a Meemic Foundation Member (which I am).
The themes are:
  • Celebrate a Favorite Season,
  • Selfie, or
  • Favorite School Memory
Fate of the Earth:  Environmental Science at MSU
MSU is looking for student artwork for the annual Fate of the Earth Symposium.  Artwork should be related to humans’ relationships with the environment.  Artwork can include drawing, painting, or sculpture.  Accepted artwork will be displayed during the symposium and a few selected pieces may be featured on the symposium’s program and other materials.  Paper (choice of 12x18 or 9x12) and entry form can be picked up in the art room.  There are no awards for this art exhibition;  however, last year, Williamston Community Schools had many pieces of artwork published in their program guide as well as on display.  The symposium is open to the public and free to attend and will be held on Saturday, April 13 from 9am-5pm at the Kellogg Center on the campus of MSU.  Lunch is included with prior registration. For more information on this event and to register to attend visit: espp.msu.edu/events/fateoftheearth/2019/
