Discovery and Explorer Art Studio
Welcome to the Hornet Art Studio! I am Mrs. Herek, the visual arts teacher. Students enjoy a 45-minute class once a week. With the high volume of Discovery classes, students will have art 3 times within a 14-day cycle. We use a rotating schedule which means when we have a day off, instead of losing a day, we bump the schedule. This creates even number of class time for all students.
My goal every year is to give students many experiences with different art materials, processes, artists, and cultural groups. Every year students will draw a self-portrait, create a fired and glazed piece of artwork, use and work with a sketchbook as well as (1st-5th) design a Smokey/Woodsy Poster for our local garden club competition (competition is completely voluntary).
I try to work with classroom teachers to integrate whenever possible to enrich both visual arts and classroom instruction. It is wonderful when we can work together on a common unit. This year the following has been planned:
Kindergarten - I Have A History (Social Studies, Art, and Movement)
1st Grade - Save the Animals! (Science, Reading, Service Learning, and Art)
2nd Grade - World of Animals (Science, Reading, and Art)
2nd Grade - Our Community (Social Studies and Art)
3rd Grade - Memories of Michigan (Reading, Writing, and Art)
4th Grade - The Decades (Social Studies, Writing, Art and Movement)
4th Grade - The Castle in the Attic Mural (Reading and Art)
5th Grade - Wonder Self Portraits (Reading and Art)
5th Grade - Wax Museum (Social Studies, Writing, and Art)
