Welcome back to another new year! The students are busy, busy, busy in the Hornet Art Studio working on their self portraits. These portraits will come home very soon with our Original Works Fundraiser information which is voluntary. Every year, students create a self portrait adding realistic elements the older they get. It is so very exciting to see everyone change and grow over the years. This year in 4th & 5th grade were specially talked about proportions and the proper placement of facial features...the shocking discovery was that our eyes are REALLY in the middle of our head and they you really do need space for your forehead and hair!
Additionally, I make a black/white photo copy each year and save it until they graduate then it is presented to them at the practice graduation breakfast. I realize our students are far from high school graduation but it is something fun to look forward to seeing.

Changes, Chihuly Chandeliers, & Wings
The first week of school, students were introduced to a newly rearranged Hornet Art Studio and glass artist Dale Chihuly. Over the summer, the studio was overhauled, cleaned out, and reorganized to promote a more open feel, more opportunities for center work, consolidated materials and supply area, as well as eventually options for flexible seating.
Students were also introduced to the world of Daly Chihuly and his fabulous glass sculptures. Each student in 1st through 5th designed and added color to a piece of thin clear plastic which will be heated and stretched, twisted, curled, or changed in another way to form pieces of a large chandelier. When complete, their will be 1 for each grade level. I will be sure to take pictures and let you know where we end up hanging them, for the building and constructing is still in process.
Our younger students learned about street artist Kelsey Montague and each made a feather which was combined with all the feathers together to make a pair of wings...so we can watch them as they soar throughout the school year. The wings are located across from the Discovery Office under the American flag and is a great photo op.
